Every day I see Facebook business pages creating giveaways which break the golden Facebook guidelines.
Now I can understand why they do, more entries, more reach, more exposure BUT is this really worth risking losing your Facebook page? That page which has taken you months, years even to grow, work, engage! Creating content, responding to your followers and building a reputation. All for the sake of reaching a few thousand more people.
Of course, not everyone who breaks the guidelines has their page deleted but it does happen. I’ve seen it. As far as I’m concerned this is not a risk I am prepared to take. It’s something I spend a lot of time talking to small businesses about too. Many don’t even realise that there are rules in place.
So what are these rules I speak of?
This screenshot is taken from the official Facebook guidelines page (October 2016) which is updated regularly. Save this link. Bookmark it. Check it for any changes whenever you run a new competition as these guidelines can change at any time and it’s your responsibility to know what they say!
The main rule above you need to be aware of is that you MUST NOT ask the follower to use their own Facebook profile as a requirement of entry. Simply put this means you…
- CANNOT ask someone to share your giveaway post to their personal profile
- CANNOT ask someone to tag a friend
So what can you do?
- You CAN ask a follower to like the post
- You CAN ask a follower to comment on the post
Here is an example of a giveaway we ran on one of our Facebook pages (feel free to use this as a template.)
As you can see we have clearly stated when the competition will close and that it is not endorsed by Facebook in any way. It is also worth including whether or not overseas entrants are eligible and whether the prize can be exchanged for cash or an alternative prize – always good to cover as much as possible!
This giveaway is simple, easy to administer and above all else DOES NOT break the rules. Amazingly people still share and tag their friends without you asking them to – the beauty of social media.
We run all of our Facebook giveaways like this and with great success.
So there you go – now you know how to run a Facebook giveaway WITHOUT breaking those golden Facebook rules.
